What is Evergreen Content?

When working as a freelance writer, it's a good idea to understand the value of "evergreen content." In simple terms, evergreen content refers to articles that stand the test of time. They will be relevant for years to come, making them a valuable addition to a website.

There are two main points to consider when providing evergreen content: Choosing timeless topics and choosing language that can stand alone.

Choosing evergreen topics

Evergreen topics are all around us. You can create timeless content in nearly any subject by simply choosing topics that are not linked to a particular season, event or trend. For example, an article reviewing the hottest holiday gifts for 2015 is not an evergreen piece, but a piece offering gift giving tips for couples will be useful year after year.

Evergreen topics typically do not include news stories or current events, fads and trends, or articles about a particular season or holiday. Although some seasonal or holiday pieces can use evergreen language to help them receive annual attention year after year.

Choosing evergreen language

While some topics are better for evergreen content, you still have to be careful to use language that will stand the test of time. Reread what you've written with a critical eye, looking for any wording which might not be relevant three, five or ten years from now.
  • Avoid any phrases that refer to an event in relation to the time of publication, such as: last week, next year, or On Tuesday. Instead, include the full date. For example: At the National Magician Symposium, on June 2, 2014, noted illusionist Abbie Cadabra wowed fans by making a unicorn appear in a cloud of bubbles. Instead of: At last summer's National Magician Symposium, noted illusionist . . . 
  • Be wary of including statistics. Demographics, rankings and other statistics are likely to change over time, making your article out-dated and inaccurate. This includes using superlatives and comparatives, like most or more, as they imply a ranking which may not be true in the future.
  • Watch out for words like always and never. Unless you can state something with absolute certainty, always and never are generally good words to avoid in freelance writing. This is particularly true with evergreen content, as you don't know what the future holds or how it may influence what is always or never true. 
Evergreen content helps web publishers fill their site with content that won't go out of style. It also helps freelance writers build an inventory of articles which can be sold at a later date. Be sure to include SEO content with your evergreen pieces so they will continue drawing online traffic for years to come.
