Hot in Cleveland - I'm Hooked

Wendie Malick, Jane Leeves, Valerie Bertinelli, and Betty White. And it's set in Cleveland. How could I not watch?

So, I set a season pass and still watched the Hot in Cleveland pilot in real time (which, for me, is saying a lot!). Then I left the encore on while typing this post. Two viewings, one opinion: These ladies are off to a good start!

Yes, it's formulaic--but in a charming, comfortable way. And yes, it's predictable--but it's a pilot and it's main purpose was to set up the (rather contrived) premise.

I know Betty White has been getting a lot of press for starring in this (and I do love Betty White!), but it's the three younger actresses who carried the first episode. Particularly Jane Leeves, who had all of my favorite lines including:
"Friends don't let friends move to Cleveland."
and
"This is why the Internet was invented. For men to find pictures of naked celebrities and for women to cyber-stalk the men they trust."
Plus, it was her idea to order chili fries and non-lite beer.

Though I do adore Betty White, and I would love to say she had her moments, I wasn't as impressed with her in this role. Let's just say this outspoken old lady is no Sophia Petrillo, and she never will be if the writers don't give her some substance. Not every line has to be a zinger (or attempted zinger).

Overall the pilot was a good start, maybe not a great start, but a good start. I want to see more and I'm hoping that in a few seasons, I'll rewatch the pilot and be amazed at how much the characters have grown.

**End of Season Update: Okay, so the season has been kind of eh. Some good episodes, some not so good. But for some reason, I looked forward to each one. There's just something cheesy and fun and comforting about this show, kind of like WWII era USO movies.
