Weekday Matinee, Baby!

I just got home from my own private screening of the new Star Trek movie! That's right, a whole big theater entirely empty except for me and the hubby!

How did I manage that? Did I win a contest? Am I just that special? Nope. We just went to a Wednesday matinee and there was no one else there!

Perfect way to see a really phenomenal movie! We picked prime seats in the very center of the theater, got settled in and didn't even have to worry about talking during the movie or silencing our cell phones. Very cool.

What was even cooler was the movie itself. I had heard it was good, so it wasn't an entire surprise, but it was so much better than I expected!
As a non-trekkie, I thought I might be a little lost through the movie. One of the reasons I've never gotten into Star Trek is that whenever I've turned on an episode I have no idea what's going on, who the aliens are, or which races consider themselves to be allies or enemies.

But this Star Trek took care of that in a stroke of genius. In a nutshell, we've gone back to the original Enterprise's crew just finishing school and- Bam! -there's a whole time travel story line that completely resets the storyline.

I take that to basically be an instant tabula rasa. Non-trekkies can jump in, see how the crew of the USS Enterprise initially comes together (in this new alternative universe), and be set to watch future installments because it can all be brand-spankin' new from here on out.

This Star Trek was just a great space action-flick that was completely accessible for non-trekkies, but with enough inside knowledge to keep fans happy too. (I think.) There are so many possibility to weave together old storylines and create total new ones. Man, I love an alternate universe!

My Star Trek knowledge is limited to the original TV show and one movie that I barely remember (the one with the whales?), but I thought this movie was true to the original characters. I loved Bones! (He was my favorite from the TV show.)

I also didn't expect it to be so cleverly funny. There were several laugh out loud moments, even in the midst of serious situations. There were some funny lines that were nods to the original show (even I picked up on some of them!) and some really witty one-liners. It had such a nice blend of action and comedy that it was almost Whedonesque at times!

(Wouldn't it be awesome if they got Joss to write a future sequel?)

Nicely written and easily read. Perfect for late nights after a long day:)

Hehe, and i will surely catch this movie now in the theater. Usually it takes about six to nine months before movies gets on the screen here, but this Star Trek film has been rafter swift.

Having the whole theater for yourself is the best experience. I can remember myself when i lived in the north of Norway, a town called Vadsø (its about as far north as you can get in Europe) i always had the theater alone. In a city with 7000 people there were only about a few individuals who frequently went to watch movies. Ahh, the good old days:P
